The heat pump in the Water Treatment Plant of the Helsinki Region Environmental Services HSY

The heat pump in the Water Treatment Plant of the Helsinki Region Environmental Services HSY

The heat pump station in the Pitkäkoski Water Treatment Plant of the Helsinki Region Environmental Services HSY recovers heat from the raw water from Lake Päijänne and transfers it into the internal heating network of the station.

The special challenge concerning household water is that heat recovery may not compromise the reliability of delivery or water hygiene under no circumstance. There is also a danger that raw water will freeze in the heat exchangers when the temperature is low. The system pilots new technology and the experiences gained may be utilized in other water treatment plants.

The purpose of the pump system is to produce heat into the heating network of the plant. The heat source for the pump is water originating from Lake Päijänne in the raw water pipeline. The main principle is that raw water is directed to the pump station where heat is recoveded and the water then directed back to the pipeline somewhat colder. The heat benefit is around 2 degrees. The system includes two Oilon’s ChillHeat S280 pumps.
