Kakola’s heat pump station
Kakola’s heat pump station
TSE’s (Turun Seudun Energiantuotanto Oy) heat pump plant in Kakola utilizes wastewater’s heat in order to produce both district heating and cooling for buildings at Turku region. The plant was finished in Spring 2009 next to Kakola’s wastewater treatment plant and the second heat pump was installed in Summer 2013. With the help of heat pumps the remaining heat energy from the water can be recovered instead of discharging it directly to the sea.
The heat produced in the heat pump plant corresponds to the heating needs of ca. 24 000 citizens of Turku. The wastewater cools down in heat pumps while releasing the heat energy to the water circulating in district heat network, after this the cooled down water is still used to district cooling. The plant is situated in a cave inside of Kakola’s rock. Besides the heat pumps there is a cold water reservoir (16 000 cubic metres) which is used to level daily variations in the district cooling network.

LED lighting for logistics terminal, DHL Freight Ltd, Vantaa Finland
LED lighting for logistics terminal, DHL Freight Ltd, Vantaa Finland
DHL Freight Ltd's terminal in Vantaa Finland was one of the first installations with Valtavalo’s Finnish made LED tubes. Various measurements were executed in the premises by a technical maintenance professional before and after the installation. In addition to the significant 60% energy savings, the customer noticed that the LED tubes achieve 25% higher illuminance than the T8 fluorescent tubes that were previously used in the premises. Terminal lighting requires durability and energy efficiency, due to high 24/7 usage. Thus, the Finnish made long-lasting product was a natural choice for the site.

LED tubes make schools brighter and save electricity in Vantaa
LED tubes make schools brighter and save electricity in Vantaa
LED tubes played an important role in generating the energy savings needed for financing energy-saving investments in 14 schools and other public buildings in Vantaa. There were typical municipality-owned buildings selected for the project, like schools, day care centres, sports halls, libraries and a multipurpose centre. About one-quarter of the savings in electricity and heat will come with LED tubes.
Fluorescent tubes were replaced by LED tubes easily by installing them on existing lighting fixtures, which was seen as a better solution than a major renovation by installing integrated LED luminaires.

Nearly zero-energy hall in Hämeenlinna
Nearly zero-energy hall in Hämeenlinna
The first near zero-energy hall in Finland for commercial and office premises has been completed at Häme University of Applied Sciences (HAMK) in Hämeenlinna. Built for R&D and teaching use, the new hall will be occupied by HAMK and Ruukki Construction. The hall was built to show that it is economically viable to build a near zero-energy building even in northern climes.
The main departure point in building the hall was to create a building that both saves energy and utilises renewable energy. The successful outcome of the building is that it was designed as a whole rather than being split up into various parts. Optimisation gave the best end result over the entire lifetime of the building. In this context, optimisation means investment outlay, additional costs during the use of the building and the potential savings were taken into account when choosing the solutions used. In other words, energy savings and generation were examined over the entire lifetime of the building. For example, it is not worth using thicker insulation in the roof and walls where a higher return can be gained by using renewable energy.
Ruukki Classic solar roof collects solar heat, which is conducted through energy piles into the ground. The heat stored in this way is used to heat the building during the winter. The building façade features the Ruukki® on-wall solar system, which converts the sun’s rays into energy for the building. The glass windows on the south-facing side of the building have been replaced by polycarbonate daylight windows, through which incoming light does not glare. These windows also insulate heat well and so prevent the sun’s thermal rays from heating the premises in summer.
The airtight outside walls have been created using energy panels, which save heating costs. This in turn reduces lifecycle costs and carbon dioxide emissions. Ruukki’s heating and cooling profiles based on solar radiation have been affixed to the underside of the ceiling. These cut the energy consumption used in air-conditioning and reduce temperature variations on each floor.
Ruukki Expression and Ruukki Forma products add to the impressive looks of the building. Expression enables any photographic image to be taped on to a façade, in this case a cloudy sky. Forma enables façade cladding products to be affixed to panels to give buildings a more multi-dimensional look. In this case, Cor-Ten rainscreen panels have been used.
Instruments and censors have been installed in the building structures to measure the functioning of the building’s structures and mechanical and electrical solutions, and to verify energy efficiency. The data generated will be used by adjusting the building to work as planned.
Ruukki
Ruukki has knowledge of energyefficient steel solutions as well as the largest product and service range of the market. The customer receives needed steel products and services directly from one supplier. Ruukki's facade systems offer a wide range of complete wall systems for industrial and commercial construction. In addition to existing sandwich panel and energy panel systems, Ruukki is now launching a new architectural facade system that combines high standard of architecture with excellent energy efficiency. Facade systems will be delivered as packages containing all necessary parts and equipment.
Ruukki® façade systems are always all-inclusive deliveries with all needed components for a complete installation.
The heat pump in the Water Treatment Plant of the Helsinki Region Environmental Services HSY
The heat pump in the Water Treatment Plant of the Helsinki Region Environmental Services HSY
The heat pump station in the Pitkäkoski Water Treatment Plant of the Helsinki Region Environmental Services HSY recovers heat from the raw water from Lake Päijänne and transfers it into the internal heating network of the station.
The special challenge concerning household water is that heat recovery may not compromise the reliability of delivery or water hygiene under no circumstance. There is also a danger that raw water will freeze in the heat exchangers when the temperature is low. The system pilots new technology and the experiences gained may be utilized in other water treatment plants.
The purpose of the pump system is to produce heat into the heating network of the plant. The heat source for the pump is water originating from Lake Päijänne in the raw water pipeline. The main principle is that raw water is directed to the pump station where heat is recoveded and the water then directed back to the pipeline somewhat colder. The heat benefit is around 2 degrees. The system includes two Oilon’s ChillHeat S280 pumps.

The largest LED tube project in Scandinavia - the parking facilities in Jumbo Shopping Centre
The largest LED tube project in Scandinavia - the parking facilities in Jumbo Shopping Centre
The parking facilities of Jumbo Shopping Centre, including service rooms and technical facilities, is now lit with about 6,000 LED tubes. As far as we know, this number makes the Jumbo LED tube project the largest of its kind in Scandinavia, and probably also the largest LED project in Finland. n addition to saving energy, LED tubes also decrease the need for maintenance. The electronic ballasts were removed from the luminaires during installing the LED tubes. The electronic ballasts broke down easily and might have risked a fire starting as a consequence.

Sybimar's closed circulation concept
Sybimar's closed circulation concept
Sybimar has developed a bioenergy and food production solution based on closed circulation, where waste, waste heat, nutrients and carbon dioxide are used and recycled back to energy and food production. The pilot plant of the concept functions in Uusikaupunki, but the concept can be tailored to serve different needs in local conditions.
The basic idea behind the concept is to create sustainable and economically sound business without burdening the Environment. The concept includes a fishery, a greenhouse, a biogas plant, a generator as well as a biofuel plant. The fishery circulates waste water and is situated on dry land. The nutritious water from the fishery is guided to the greenhouse to fertilize growing vegetables.
The biogas plant recovers all gases formed by the waste in the landfill. Besides this, the organic side streams of the greenhouse and the fishery are directed there. The gas is utilized in Sybimar’s own generator to produce electricity and heat which are then used in the plants of the closed circulation concept.
In the exhaustless closed circulation concept energy is produced from waste and the fishery and the greenhouse are connected to each other. The greenhouse heats up, oxidizes and purifies water, whereas the nutrients from the fish farming fertilize growth. The digestate remains from the biogas plant are used for soil enrichment.
Sybimar Ltd
Sybimar Ltd was founded in 2005 and is based in Uusikaupunki, Finland. The company produces biofuels from food industry by-products and manufactures process equipment for producing biofuels. The company also develops and produces process equipment for food industry. Sybimar takes part in the Carbon Neutral Municipalities project which brings municipalities, businesses, citizens and experts together to create and carry out solutions to reduce greenhouse gas emissions.
