Policy Instruments

Energy efficiency, the promotion of renewable energy and the reduction of emissions with an impact on climate can be guided with both international and national policies. The European Union has set its member states common goals for the enhancement of energy consumption, the reduction of emissions and the increase of renewable energy use. On the national level, the work is guided by, among other things, energy and climate action plans and national legislation.

In Finland, emissions reductions are also pursued with the help of voluntary measures, such as energy efficiency agreements and energy audits. To achieve the set results, the government grants aid, within the framework of appropriations, for the implementation of energy audits, investments that aim to increase the efficiency of energy use and for the adoption of renewable energy and energy-efficient technology.
